Hospital lights and a plastic chair
3 a.m. and I’m still there
Whole world changed in a single day
But the quiet made it feel far away

I walked outside to the cold night air
Everything different, everything there
I sat in the car, just holding the wheel
Trying to understand what I’m supposed to feel

And the road was dark, but my head was loud
With every question I won’t say out loud
Am I strong enough, am I good enough now
To be the man that you see somehow
Time moves fast and I’m scared I’ll miss
All the little things that make up this
If I lose my way, if I come undone
I just hope I’m still your dad when it’s all said and done

I drove home on empty streets
Hands still shaking on the wheel and seat
Streetlights blurred in a yellow line
I kept thinking, “How is this life mine?”

Radio low and the city asleep
I got a promise I’m trying to keep
I don’t know how, but I know I’ll try
To be the man you see in your mind

And the road was dark, but my head was loud
With every question I won’t say out loud
Am I strong enough, am I good enough now
To be the man that you see somehow
Time moves fast and I’m scared I’ll miss
All the little things that make up this
If I lose my way, if I come undone
I just hope I’m still your dad when it’s all said and done

Now the years move faster than I thought they would
You’re laughing in the next room like everything’s good
And I’m standing here in the kitchen light
Wondering where the hell the time goes at night

I’ve fought some things you’ll never see
Some nights they still get the best of me
But I swear I’m trying every day
To be a man you won’t have to save

I remember that drive like it’s still right now
Empty roads and I didn’t know how
To be a father, to be a man
I just knew I loved you as much as I can

And the road was dark, but I see it now
It was leading me to you somehow
And I don’t know much, but I know this part
You’re the only thing that ever made sense in my heart
Time moves fast, yeah I see it run
From that drive alone to where we’ve come
If I lose my way, if I come undone
I just hope I’m still your dad when it’s all said and done

I drove home alone that night
But I wasn’t alone
Not anymore
